In a message dated 01-24-08, Paul Quinn said to Holger Granholm:

Hi Phil,

HG> I have to resort to netmail at the moment hoping at least that will
HG> work. Since I changed to another host my echomail disappears.

PQ>Oops. Do you have any other (uplink) choices?

No, not at the moment.

I think there's light in the tunnel now. You received my netmail with
the intervention of Ward Dossche that stated my addressing to you was
wrong (2:2/3). I just replied to him by sending him the original as it
went out from my system. Something had changed the address on its way.

And now I received this netmail reply from you as well as one from Björn
Forsström. Now I'll try to send this to you also in the WIN95 echo.

PQ>I first tried OS/2 back in the late 1980's (with version 2.0, I
PQ>think). I hated it utterly and never tried it since. I'm sorry to
PQ>report this but it's the truth.

I first tried the OS/2 2.0 demo in 1993 and later the same year
installed v2.1. Since then I have upgraded through v2.11, v3.0 and 1997
to Warp 4 and finally upgraded to FP12 in dec. 1999 due to the millenium
shift. All this was om my work machine but in dec. 1999 I also shifted
my BBS to run under Warp 4/FP12 from previously having run under
PC-DOS/Desqview.

PQ>I must add that I used to operate a desktop replacement in Windows
PQ>For Workgroups 3.11 many years ago, which emulated the OS/2 Warp 3.x
PQ>interface. That was nice.

I also had WfWG 3.11 on my machine but with Warp 4 there also was a
version of Windows 3.xx included that made the "DOS version" superfluos.

Recently I aquired a 2nd hand TP23 that has XP Pro installed but I have
not yet made any deep dives into that. I have however posted questions
about it in the WIN95 echo but due to the non-working routing they have
disappeared into the blue. They are saved though so I'll post them again
when everything starts working again.

PQ>I am really, really happy with my linux config at present. So much
PQ>so that I haven't updated it to the latest and greatest, which I
PQ>have tried. I'm not about to make a complete change of OS just to
PQ>run a real MS-DOS again (and, I don't think the DOS emulation in
PQ>OS/2 is a -real- DOS in any case). I already have a good setup now
PQ>with a boot menu offering me linux or Win98se.

I have also played with the idea of installing linux but I have ran
through so many operating systems from assembler, CP/M, MS/PC-DOS and
Windows (not an OS) that I hesitate to make the switch but I do have
Red Hat, Ubuntu v5.04 and v6.10 but they all require more HD real estate
than I'm willing to sacrifice to just an OS with GUI. As an example,
OS/2 Warp 4 requires just 120 Mb. Compare that to Windows!

As for the DOS in OS/2, it's not an emulation. I have programmed DOS
programs in that environment and they behave perfectly under pure DOS.

CU L8ER,

Holger
