You are of course, free to never take that step... I doubt, however, whether
any of us "fully appreciate" Linux or Windows, for that matter... if by that
you mean use them to their fullest capabilities. (That's why there is a market
for books and magazine articles explaining how to do relatively obscure things
on all of these systems. Even on the Mac, I just received a review copy of
David Pogue's Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual).

re. DOS- the whole evolution of Windows and Linux over the past decade and a
half or so has to make working at a command line interface increasingly less
necessary for most users. I have found myself resorting to the command line in
a Linux terminal session to make settings changes on my Linux system from time
to time, but almost always I do that by copying/pasting complex commands that
someone has posted online. It is not necessary to understand something in order
to get the desired changes.

The point of your gParted experience is that it is possible to use Linux to get
useful computing done without having to know anything about Linux-- or even to
know that you are using Linux (which you didn't at the time). I have Ubuntu
installed on an old laptop that stays at my Sechelt house; my wide and guests
use it to browse the web, check email, sometimes to do some minor word
processing, print documents, etc... none of them know or care that it's a Linux
system... just that it works in a way that they can figure out without any
instruction needed-- as you did with gParted.

I think I'm going to mail you a bootable Ubuntu 'Live' CD... while no one will
force you to put it into a computer's CD drive and boot up, I hope you will
give it a try-- not necessary to 'convert' you to become a Linux user, but just
so you can see that you can use it without having to be some sort of expert in
it. As you described about Firefox, you may conclude that you have no need for
it and even that you don't have much interest in it... but at least you will
have tasted it.
