I believe GRUB is still the bootloader of choice for those 64 bit Linux
distributions that are offered.  See Mepis for example.

Minor kernel updates are issued for Ubuntu on a regular basis.  Just yesterday
I downloaded an update for the kernel that I was notified of from "automatic
updates".  Most of the kernel updates that I have installed for Ubuntu are for
things that I really have no knowledge of.  Sometimes, a kernel update for a
Linux distribution will include new drivers or a wireless fix.  But that type
of update is usually reserved for a new version of the distribution.

Slackware?  You are sounding like MK.  :)  Have fun.
