        Good question, Martin. We have to start on square one. When
   you get a HD into a laptop, I do not know if this applies to a
   desktop, if you go into the BIOS and select Security, you can set
   this up.

        Mind you, if you do not, the BIOS will see the HD, accept it
   and keep on booting. Now, if you do set a HD PW, when you start the
   booting, the big ON switch, it will start the routine and get to
   the logic board on the HD where a PW is set and stop if you do not
   enter the proper PW, it will place on your screen, an icon looking
   like a small HD, ratehr a "voulme" than a flat medium as a disk.
   Matters not, the process is stopped. Then, knowing the PW, you type
   it in and the booting carries on. These steps have to be done in
   the logical, for humans, order.

        Believe me, this is what happens. Your last line above is
   proper, if the drive looks to you like it is dead it might not be,
   the icon on the screen tells you the story. I set ALL the laptops
   that go through my hands this way and I keep a log of the
   different PWs in case a friend forgets.

        To get rid of a PW, you type it in, the BIOS keeps singing
    along and you hit Del to enter it, you can go to the Security
    again and to toggle the PW OFF, you type in the present PW, hit a
    blank dialogue twice, you are entering a no PW, the PW is removed.
    You NEED the PW to do this. That HD PW will also lock a system if
    in a slave position, blame BIOS.

        If you slip the HD into another system, the protection is
    still there and no data is available, none at all. The ultimate
    protection. There are people that will do this for a living,
    removing a PW but their cost is beyond the average user like me. I
    am sure that a wiz-kid could design an electronic box that would
    force an install via one of the 40 wires on that flat ribbon. Not
    I, I said a kid.  ;-)

        Here is a line that I captured from an IBM site:

    ->  The only solution for a harddrive password is knowing it and removing
    it. If you don't know it, the hdd is useless; buy a new one. <-
