JP> Hello Martin, nice chatting with you. !

MA> I know your probably getting fed up with this thread....but.
MA> If the BIOS doesn't see it and it just goes dead, how can you
 MA> enter a password?

JP> Good question, Martin. We have to start on square one. When
JP> you get a HD into a laptop, I do not know if this applies to a
JP> desktop, if you go into the BIOS and select Security, you can set
 JP> this up.

You can set up a BIOS password on all the computors I've used.
Is that what you mean?

JP> Mind you, if you do not, the BIOS will see the HD, accept it
JP> and keep on booting. Now, if you do set a HD PW, when you start the
JP> booting, the big ON switch, it will start the routine and get to
JP> the logic board on the HD where a PW is set and stop if you do not
JP> enter the proper PW, it will place on your screen, an icon looking
JP> like a small HD, ratehr a "voulme" than a flat medium as a disk.
JP> Matters not, the process is stopped. Then, knowing the PW, you type
JP> it in and the booting carries on. These steps have to be done in
JP> the logical, for humans, order.

I see, so the BIOS password must be set for the H/D to be seen.
Gotcha.

JP> Believe me, this is what happens. Your last line above is
JP> proper, if the drive looks to you like it is dead it might not be,
JP> the icon on the screen tells you the story. I set ALL the laptops
JP> that go through my hands this way and I keep a log of the
JP> different PWs in case a friend forgets.

Ok...you must understand that I'm in no way trying to convert you to Linux.
What happens if you set the BIOS password but use the Linux live CD to boot
the system?

JP> To get rid of a PW, you type it in, the BIOS keeps singing
JP> along and you hit Del to enter it, you can go to the Security
JP> again and to toggle the PW OFF, you type in the present PW, hit a
JP> blank dialogue twice, you are entering a no PW, the PW is removed.
JP> You NEED the PW to do this. That HD PW will also lock a system if
JP> in a slave position, blame BIOS.

Sure but if the H/D is master and password set and you boot Linux CD can
Linux see it?

You need USB flash connected for this to work.

From the terminaI issue these commands.

sudo mount -a

sudo mount > /media/disk/mounts.txt

sudo cat /media/disk/mounts.txt

You should see a lot of stuff. If it works, next time you're
using XP you should be able to cut and paste "mounts.txt"
here.

That will allow us to see if Linux can see it.

JP> If you slip the HD into another system, the protection is
JP> still there and no data is available, none at all. The ultimate
JP> protection. There are people that will do this for a living,
JP> removing a PW but their cost is beyond the average user like me. I
JP> am sure that a wiz-kid could design an electronic box that would
JP> force an install via one of the 40 wires on that flat ribbon. Not
 JP> I, I said a kid. ;-)

I understand this and i don't want you to stress out over it. It is but
a game. I need to know if the Linux system can see it.

As you have been working on the problem for over a year it may
be worth chewing the fat over (pun intended). :)

JP> Here is a line that I caeptured from an IBM site:
JP> The only solution for a harddrive password is knowing it and
 JP> removing
JP> it. If you don't know it, the hdd is useless; buy a new one.

Never believe what they say until all avenues have been exhausted.

JP> ... Ubuntu has been side-lined for the time being.
 JP> ... Who will blame me ?

No one would blame you but I believe that a tool needs to be
examined before discarding.

Having said that, it ain't worth losing sleep over.
