OpenDNS unfortunately also does the equivalent 404 hijacking, although they
openly admit that they do it for advertising to support the service being free.
They also automatically "fix" urls you accidently type incorrectly, and I
believe also block certain known phishing sites.  Those are all good things for
people who want it, and I don't fault them for their 404 practices since it's
free, but I just want pure DNS lookup.

4.2.2.1 is usually the one I've ended up using when Charter messes up,
actually.  I did have full DNS configured on a server I host sites from that I
could use, but I read that allowing recursion can result in security and
performance risks, so I disabled it.  It only returns the domains it's
authoritative for now.

Some ISPs have been known to actually replace the advertisements in a page with
their own advertisements, and worse yet, insert ads into pages which normally
wouldn't have them.  Both of which are particularly low.  The greed of some
people has no bounds if the technology can allow it.

I've tried running a filtering proxy, but much like with DNS, I find I just
prefer to have the page the way it's supposed to be.  There's always that
chance it could remove something important from a page to keep it from
functioning properly or whatever, even if just a small chance.  And Opera makes
it really simple to block individual advertising content from a page, which I
do on some places where it's pervasive.
 
I'm not against advertising, because it helps pay for content.  But when it
gets shoved in my face to a strong degree, or worse, is put in something I
already paid for, then I'll have no part of it.  I mean even some video games
you buy these days have in-game advertising, like EA's Battlefield 2142. Stuff
like that really bugs me, particularly due to how much the game costs in the
first place.  I always find out how to disable such stuff, even if it means
spending the time to figure it out on my own.
