        I am really puzzled too, Alan.  I have never had that much
   trouble, ever, with a MS program nor OS. On this Acer, a desktop,
   all is "on board" the MoBo, no driver required or if they are, they
   were provided with the Acer. Ubuntu will not see the on-board NIC.
   I will include a text from a Google search, I will edit it as it is
   long enough :

Now change the line
isa_bridge = pci_find_device(0x1039, 0x0965, isa_bridge);
to 
isa_bridge = pci_find_device(0x1039, 0x0968, isa_bridge);
Or whatever ID you actually have (mine is 0x0968, remember).
 
Now to permanently install the new driver, copy the sis190.ko file into the
modules directory. Mine is located in
/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net. But first do a backup of the
original one! In order to copy, is as simply as typing
cp [kernel_src_folder]/drivers/net/sis190.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net

        I am not up to this task. There are some curly braces to these
   commands too, yeark ! As he says, adding a run of the mill NIC
   would sove the problem.

 What's the connection between "validating this NIC... on
 AZ> Vista" and getting an adapter for it for Ubuntu? 

        The on board NIC capability is automatic, no NIC per se. Mind
   you, there has to be the equivalent as I connect fine. That is what
   the adapter in a near future for U'U, getting a NIC card.

        That is what I was doing, the CD to see first if it would run.

        Ah ! ah ! Great minds always think alike.

        This is where the above quoted test is from. If you want the
   URL, I will provide, there was about if not more than 1/2 of it cut
   out by me.

        Yes. As I could not work U'U on this Acer, I got back on the
    Athlon of many fine years of service. Again, off the CD as XP is
    king on it. U'U will not see any keyboard now, it never did as
    when I first started with your CD, thanks, I had loaded U'U on a
    spare HD and that was fine. Why would this one not see any KB, I
    fed it three, they are seen in XP.

        Give me any MS OS any day. But U'U is fun to try and see who
    is master, for the time being, I am not.

        How was the flight to the Apple. Oh, sorry ! ;-)
     
       
...    I finally got TI to work on my Vista.
