It's hard to say.  Older hardware "seems" to do better with Linux distros but
not all the time.  Re the Compaq:  Go into the BIOS and see if there's a
setting for the keyboard, USB? PS2?  What ever.  If the keyboard is USB it may
not be recognized by the system until the OS is active.  A BIOS setting maybe? 
Also sounds like the Compaq video is not being properly picked up.

That's a pain isn't it?  I really haven't had any difficulty with Ubuntu on my
older desktop.  Everything worked well right from boot up. Other than playing
around with the video settings for proper resolution...

Now my older Toshiba laptop is a horse of a different color!  I tried
installing Mepis, Kubuntu, etc.  They worked somewhat... no wireless, no sleep,
no hibernation, on and on...  I finally gave up.

I finally was able to download and install the latest version of Neo Office
(Open Office for OS X) without having to contribute first.  Neo Office is
impressive and does very well emulating MS Office.  However, like its Win
counterpart, it installs everything including the kitchen sink, bathtub,
outhouse, etc. :)  I really only wanted to tryout the "writer" (like MS Word). 
There is no way to selectively uninstall the apps which are not needed.

I removed it after giving it a test run.  I have a copy of iWork 2008 which was
donated to us and installed it instead - for the time being.

I'm not exactly impressed with it either although the PowerPoint type program
called "Keynote" is very good.  The Word equivalent "Pages" is OK but IMO,
difficult to use.  The iWork 2008 program exports to MS document format but not
by default, it has to be selected each time.  An inconvenience.  We have a copy
of MS Office 2008 on order.  Trying to teach my wife (also church secretary) to
use something other than MS Office is not worth the time and effort on my part.
:)

BTW, she loves the Mac!  My son also a Mac user has exerted some influence in
that regard. :)  Sound familiar? :)
