If I had understood (bad reading) that it concerned Ubuntu I would have
kept my mouth shut because I haven't installed that yet. When I do I
will specify the swedish/finnish keyboard to have the scandinavian
umlaut characters available.

If it's that difficult to access the high ASCII characters I will miss
the possibility to use ü, á, æ, ê and others.

Yes you are correct. We were lucky that Soviet didn't ask for the Åland
Islands after the war but were satisfied to rent the point of Porkkala
for 50 years as a lock to the Gulf of Finland and protection for
Leningrad.

They didn't fulfill their rent request but returned Porkkala in 1956 to
finnish sovereignity.

The Aland Islands would of course have been a perfect lock for the
entire Gulf of Bothnia but they had nothing to protect there.
