I guess I'm not visualizing your network.  It sounds like you have two 
wireless base stations (you call them a router and an access point).  If 
so, it also sounds like one is a "g" device and the other is an "n" 
device.  Are the NICs (USB and built-in) both in use on the same 
computer?  At the same time?

One thing to note is that 802.11b/g/n use 2.4 GHz (it sorta looks like 
the "n" spec supports 5.6 GHz, also, but I couldn't quickly find a 
current device that uses that frequency) so the router and AP could be 
competing with each other, depending on location.  I also found that my 
wife's "b" card was interfering with speed (not quality) on my "g" 
laptop - apparently the router fell back to a lowest common denominator 
when both cards were in use but that was on a single base station/router.

No, the usage of the same frequencies would cause more interference than 
two separate frequencies.  WiFi operates (typically) on 2.4 MHz. so a 
phone that also operates on 2.4 MHz. could relatively easily interfere.
