That's great news, Tom!   USB is acually the preferred "modern" solution, so
it shouldn't be surprising that Ubuntu prefers it.

Instead of messing around with dev?/tty configuration, I simply use a router
that supports dial backup - via its DB9/RS232 serial port.  The router takes
care of the dialup "connection", and all Ubuntu has to do is worry about
talking to the router - which it does quite automatically.  Added benefits
are that the router then provides shared access to the internet and intranet
between computers.  I have 3 computers linked this way (2 wired, and 1
wireless).

The DI-713P only offers WEP encryption, only 802.11b, and the wireless radio
can't be turned off, but the router is configurable to only allow specific
MAC addresses. It can be configured to allow or disallow access to the
internet for particular MACs, wired OR wireless.  In addition, the
hard-enabled firewall provides a "stealth" rating accordng to grc.com.

I use the DI-713P for a full-time connection and auto-redial on a separate
phone line.  But if you only have one phone line, the router can be
configured to not redial upon disconnect - or, just turn off the modem.
Another added advantage is that the router can be used for DSL if/when it's
available to you; the dialup feature is completely optional.

The more current "replacement" model for the DI-713P is the DI-824VUP.  But
at over $100, I'm not ready for that.   It has some nice features though:
802.11a/b/g, a USB printer port as well as Parallel, the serial COM port,
the radio can be disabled, WPA-PSK, support for VPN tunneling, and a 3-yr
Warranty if purchased new.
