I've gone to the new versions two ways:

1) On the existing system (the Dell laptop)-- used the Ubuntu auto-update
feature, and allowed it to update itself to the new version.  That worked
pretty quickly (especially for doing it the morning of the official release,
when the servers were probably getting a good workout)-- and without problem.
It also lets you choose to continue with the previous version if desired.

2) I also downloaded the CD image file, burned it to a CD, and used it on
another system (actually on my Mac, booted to Windows using Apple's Boot Camp).
On release day, that took longer-- and I had to try several of the North
American servers before finding one that let me connect.

There are some nice features in the new version. Among them:

-- along with the ability to boot to the CD, try it as a Live CD and 
optionally install from there, there's also a boot menu item to go directly to
the installer. Personally, I recommend users going to the Live CD, to make sure
it supports your key hardware first, but it's nice to have the option.

-- both the Live CD option and the installed version did a better job of 
supporting my various systems' video than previous-- in both cases, it was able
to recognize the high res video and displays-- without needing any special
drivers. On the Mac, after installation, it offered the option of downloading
and installing the 'proprietary' ATI driver-- but ran in the correct hi-res
mode even without it. Getting the ATI driver allowed for more 3D and other
special effects, which I had been unable to make work in the previous versions.
(After trying them out, I turned them off again, but it was good to know they
were an option). There's also a GUI Display Resolution preference item-- much
nicer than having to hand-edit config files!

-- there's a new install option; if you insert the CD while running 
Windows, it offers to install it from within Windows. Doing this, it creates a
large 'virtual hard drive' in a folder within the Windows file system, rather
than partitioning the drive, and installs within that. (Yes, you set the
'drive' size). Then it adds a link to itself within the Windows XP/Vista boot
menu. It's even added to the Add/Remove control panel item.

So I'm pretty happy with it.
