I'm going to be offering them to attendees at my union's Technology Teachers
group (which I chair) 10 days from now-- but knowing that you lack broadband, I
would be happy to send you a copy if needed (though it sounds like you already
have 8.04).

I led a session on 'free software for education' at a Provincial conference
earlier in the year, and gave away the earlier version. Even though it is
freely downloadable, having an 'official' copy gives some people more
confidence in trying it out.

On both the systems I have 8.04 installed on (one 32-bit, plus the new 64-bit
installation), on the first boot-up, there a prompt popped up from a little
icon on the right-side of the top toolbar. I don't know what have been the
process if I ignored it at that time.

I wouldn't necessarily expect better performance-- but with the proprietary
driver, I was able to play around with the Compiz 'eye candy' 3-D desktop
effects, which I had never been able to look at with the earlier version-- even
with the proprietary driver installed.

In the end, I removed most of the eye-candy, but it was nice to be able to see
what the fuss was about.

The GRUB boot menu can be edited by hand, but there's discussion of
QGRUBEditor- a 'visual' editor at:
