I think the confusion here is about the function, not the channels. While the
devices can be configured to operate in either ad-hoc or infrastructure mode,
I'm not aware that they can operate in both modes simultaneously.  That's why
Jeff mentioned that they need a wired connection, although not directly to each
other.

Alternatively, you could use a computer to create a bridge between the two
networks, to resolve the single mode issue.  The computer would connect to the
primary router via a wireless NIC, and would have the secondary router
connected directly to it, using the OS to bridge the two networks.  Routing
will need to be enabled, and is the trickier part of the setup.

Both XP and Vista support bridging.  Linux does too, but it must be done
manually.  The obvious drawback to this setup is that the wireless signal
degrades with distance, meaning that while you will extend the range of the
signal, the DTR of the extended signal will be limited to that of the primary
wireless connection.  Probably OK for surfing, but may be inadequate for moving
large volumes of data.  That's another reason the cable connection is utilized.
