OK... I went to Google, and typed 'Lexmark Z605 Ubuntu' -- the first hit:

looks like it has potential:

Z600-series printers, this how-to will show you how to install it on your Linux
system...."

Note that you don't want to follow the instruction about 'downloading rpms from
the Lexmark site'-- as it mentions, this is for a number of other Linux
distributions; instead, you'll want to go further down the page for the
instructions for 'debian-based distros, like Knoppix or Ubuntu'. The
instructions are somewhat complex-- and are the sort of thing that drive many
potential Linux-users back to Windows-- but hopefully will do what you need.

had several people giving experiences like yours-- where the printer buzzed and
rattled, but no text came out, though one person described having success after
restarting. (In fact, that thread has 7 pages of people complaining about
various Lexmark models not working well- or at all).

I know I've mentioned to you that with the variety of donated systems that come
to my school (where I typically install Win2000 using Microsoft's FreshStart
school license) I no longer have the patience to track down drivers-- if the
hardware isn't recognized by Win2000, I just replace it with something (a NIC,
video, or sound card, typically) that IS recognized. Similarly, you may decide
that the simplest solution is to use another printer.
