If you want to see how much ink your printer wastes without having printed a
thing, simply reach down where the ink cartridges park and rub your fingers
across the diaper they have there.

The jury is still out on the ink refill thing, not all refills are successful
and the quality of the ink is in question, one of the computer mags recently
did a writeup on this. The home DIY kits are very messy as Charles relates, and
the best way to refill is when the ink is pumped into the cartridge within the
confines of a vacumn, like the machines Walgreens uses et al.

We still have a professional machine that did the same thing, except we dont do
it anymore or rather for the time being, as Dupont and Corporate are haggling.

Even so, we saw a 40 to 50% failure rate on refilled cartridges, alot having to
do with the customer sucking it dry or waiting too long after it had run dry.

I am not going to get into a debate about the economics of the printer
industry, for they do not have a lock on the practice of prices and attempted
exclusivity on consumables. But in my experiences, ink refilling is a
crapshoot, sometimes you win and sometimes you dont.

Some ways around it...

Get a inexpensive monochrome laser printer, for your all-purpose printing and
only use the color inkjet when you need to print in color or print photo's..
Page yields on laser printers are very high with a very low cost per page.

Do not buy Lexmark Inkjets, they are ink hogs, complain about needing to
replace ink before cartridge is actually empty, and the ink itself is more
expensive among the brand names available.

Do not use Dell Printers, ink is harder to come by and they use the Lexmark
print engine.

Epson inkjets, although they utilize a ink tank delivery system, are ink hogs
as are Brother Inkjets..

Canon inkjets are better.

What I have found to be attractive is the HP Inkjets that utilize the #88 ink
delivery system.. Such as:

K5400, K8600, L7580,L7590,L7680 and L7780.

The #88 ink delivery system uses tanks that can produce page yields comparable
to almost that of laser and they dont waste any ink during initialization or
other internal maintenance. The prices arent that bad and the tanks are also
available in XL variety for not even twice the price but 3 to 4 times the ink
of the standard cartridges. Print speed is also very attractive.
