If I could stretch that toaster analogy as far as I can:

Toast was first made on a stick. Then we invented a grill, and the bread was
more uniformly toasted. Electricity came along, and we could run that through a
coil of wire, and the uniformity increased again, but we still had to open two
doors, and flip the bread around to toast the other sides, and we had to do so
at the right time. Aha!!! Four coils of wire, and a spring on a switch was the
best thing since sliced bread.

Smart people are reinventing the device, yet there seems like there is always
something to complain about. (Dry breads burn to a crisp, where moist breads go
down for a second time, and you *need* to turn the outside coils off for
sconces and bagels... ... ...) If something with the appliance goes wonkey, how
many people reach for a screwdriver, and how many people load up the kids for a
ride to the mall to replace the unit? After all, life as we know it would cease
without a working toaster.

Compared to moving jumper plugs on printed circuit cards to adjust anything
from voltage settings to IRQ and memory addresses, plug and pray has come a
long way. Now that the "compatibles" rarely see resource conflicts, Apple has
hinged its advertising dollar almost exclusively on the failures of M$ Vista.
I've read that M$ has swallowed some pride, (FINALLY) and actually improved
Vista considerably. I wonder where the Apple vrs IBM add campaign will go next.
I wish George Carlin was around to revive the Hippy-Dippy Weather Man as a
Linux nut.
