I'm not sure what you can do with TESTDISK.  You should run TESTDISK /list to
see if there are warnings about the disks, in any event, before proceding with
it.

I also don't know how you got into Gentoo, but the sysrescue disk at
www.sysresccd.org uses Gentoo, and includes TESTDISK, GPARTED, and many other
tools, including NTFSPROGS.  The latter is the group that I would look at, if
you're determined to proceed with Linux.

As Jeff pointed out though, your W2K boot sector was probably blown away, and
if you wish to restore it, I don't know that you can do that with Linux.  You
should be able to access the partition though, and recover files, etc.

See Jay's post to me about a free Windows partition manager.

Someone who's used W2K will have to answer the question about its native tools
(if any) that you can use.  I don't know that a W2K install will invoke the
recovery console from the XP CD (or is compatible with it); someone else will
need to address that, as well.
