Ärende: I've had it!
====================
Hello CHARLES,

Responding to a post in the WIN95 area:
    On Thursday March 10 2005 at 21:32,
CHARLES ANGELICH [1:123/140] wrote to GERALD MILLER,
    about: I've had it!

CA>>>>>>> In all fairness to you, or anyone else reading this, BootitNG's
CA>>>>>>> documentation is a bit cryptic and the user interface could be
CA>>>>>>> sorted out a bit better than it is. Many people have made this
CA>>>>>>> same observation but it is 'mouseable' and does work as
CA>>>>>>> advertised just takes a little time getting accustomed to the
CA>>>>>>> 'procedures' and terminology (icons, menus, etc.). It's worth
CA>>>>>>> the effort but I won't tell anyone it's going to be easy to
CA>>>>>>> understand if you've never used it before.

GM>>>>>> Well, not having the software to 'work with', I can't say what
GM>>>>>> the documentation is like. I did find:

 GM>>>>>> http://members.shaw.ca/bootitng/

GM>>>>>> if you want to check it out and see if its workings are any more
GM>>>>>> precise. Let me know if the site is any more detailed than what
GM>>>>>> the documentation is, please, and if it is, then I will make sure
GM>>>>>> that I get a hard copy for when I can afford BootItNG.

CA>>>>> Will check that URL this evening.

 GM>>>> And, your opinion is?

CA>>> Reads like it was written by a journalist. Moves a bit too fast with
CA>>> not enough information about each function. I can follow it but I've
CA>>> used BootitNG for some time now (years?) and the screens and
CA>>> terminology used by Terrabyte are familiar to me.

GM>> Too bad about the journalist. Would you create something on your
 GM>> website?

CA> I've consider doing that but the 'trend' is to purchase 'name'
CA> software like Ghost even though most of them are begining to have
CA> compatibility problems and cost twice the price.

I looked at the most recent NSW (with two versions of Ghost included)
package, put it back on the shelf and resisted _all_ temptation to buy any
Symantec product. ;-)) The price was respectable enough but I'd rather
get a lobotomy for my money.

CA> I wouldn't earn even one pesos for my time/effort and I'm begining to
CA> become jealous of how my time is spent.

You're getting wiser as you get older. <g>

GM>> Okay, I was at the Terrabyte site. BootIt Next Generation when
GM>> purchased with Image for Windows (includes Image for DOS) is priced
GM>> at $49.54USD ($59.79CAD). Now, is Terrabyte shipping a CD with these
GM>> programs or is that for an e-mailed license and you have to download
 GM>> the programs?

CA> Last time I checked you download the software and get a 'license' key
 CA> for payment for same.

I've been leery of this get license key technique. Downloaded a "bundled"
program, paid for the "bundle" and only received one license. Took over
three months of e-mail messages (and snail mail of credit card billing)
before the issue was resolved and never got an apology for their error.
Once burned; twice shy!

GM>> Also, which program creates the Windows ISO image files? BING? Image
 GM>> for Windows? Both?

CA> The website is a bit confusing isn't it? The docs for BootitNG are
CA> confusing in much the same ways. :-)

Aren't you just the bearer of such good news? <g> Not much of an
incentive to purchase / try the product. Have they given any indication
that they intend to put their documentation into "layman" terms and clarify
any confusion?

CA> BooitNG will do almost everything by itself. There is a free download
CA> of a program to read/restore individual files from a BootitNG image
CA> file but I seldom need to do that here even though I do have it and
CA> did make sure it worked as advertised. :-)

That is reassuring!

CA> Image for Windows uses a windows GUI interface to create the same
CA> image files BootitNG creates but also requires the 'lock' (free)
CA> software Terrabyte offers to lock Windows while the image is being
CA> written. IFW is a bit less expensive but won't do the multiboot,
CA> partitioning, etc. that BootitNG can do. I see no reason to not get
CA> the full magilla myself and have no use for IFW here now that I have
 CA> BootitNG installed. :-)

I'm intrigued.

I'll have to go back to their site and investigate the upgrade policy -- I
tend to get irritated when I purchase software and find it's a "limited,
one time only" license....

           Cheers ... Gerald

... I've reached an age when lifetime guarantees are no longer reassuring.
