First, you simply set up the encryption (use WPA or WPA2, the latter 
preferred) and set the passphrase.  Then, with any modern OS (XP or 
better, *nix and Mac), you simply select the SSID from the list (you may 
have to click on the network icon to get the list) and it will pop open 
a prompt where you enter the passphrase.  Nothing OS-specific or clumsy 
about it.  For all intents and purposes, the proces is about the same 
regardless of OS.

You're mixing network topologies, too.  The 54Mb connection speed is 
wireless while 100Mb is wired.  Not at all comparable.  The issue of 
connect speed being incorrectly reported is a specific OS/driver issue, 
not the use of an Airport.

As stated before, this is probably due to the router expecting only 
Windows TCP/IP stacks and drivers to be used.  That, like coding a web 
site to only work with IE, isn't a Mac failure but a problem caused by 
the programmer of the remote site.

Two ways to fix this:

1) Use a wired connection to do the (re)configuration.  Since the 
encryption is only for the wireless part, a wired connection will never 
have a problem.

2) Use the router reset button (usually very small, hidden on the back 
near the power plug).  That wipes out all changed configuration settings.
