The boot manager can handle multiple physical CDs just as easily as multiple
partitions on a single CD... however, editing the configuration file for the
boot manager after the fact is more complicated than letting the Linux (in this
case Ubuntu) installer do it automatically at install time... that's why my
suggestion was to reinstall Ubuntu 8.10 from scratch-- whether onto your 2nd
hard drive or wherever... and let it set up the boot manager for you.

Alternatively-- reformat CD #2 as a Windows CD, run the Ubuntu 8.10 setup from
within Windows, and let it install onto your D: drive-- when installed that
way, it will use the Windows (Vista or XP) boot manager, and run quite happily
from a folder within the Windows file system.
