Hello BEN,

Responding to a post in the WIN95 area:
    On Thursday March 17 2005 at 14:44,
BEN RITCHEY [1:393/68] wrote to CHARLES ANGELICH,
    about: Re: lan

I probably should have addressed this message to ALL, but you were the
"unlucky" one sitting on the deck. :B->)

This all sounds very technical, but I think I have been able to "muddle"
through and accomplish similar results... The "Bingo" term is not that
difficult to understand. <grin>

BR>>> These two systems will transfer data back and forth as fast
BR>>> the hard drives can read & write it <chuckle> very cool ...

I feel guilty at chiding Charles for not getting with the game. ;-) Only
certain aspects are easy, the rest is "ball breaking" work!

Very neatly organized? Screen shots? DOS networking? E-mail will be
forthcoming! <vBg>

BR> But no, it's not "easy" or "simple" unless you get lucky. <chuckle>

I will attest that I had more blind luck than education in my attempts at
networking. ;-))

My first networked computer is my Windows XP Pro system to a router (with
hardware firewall -- pig to configure) to a cable modem. Workgroup name
being "MSHOME". This took some time to establish and I still consider it
to be a "work in progress" as each day I learn more.

My second networked computer was my (now trashed) Windows 98 SE system
plugged into the router with the WinXPP DHCP Server providing the IP
address for the W98SE. Workgroup name being "Workgroup". This was
'relatively' simple -- not without its moments of exasperation, but
certainly not so difficult as I was lead to believe.

My third networked computer was/is my DOS/Windows for Workgroup v3.11
system plugged into the router with the WinXPP DHCP Server providing the IP
address for this machine. Workgroup name being "Workgroup". This project
was by far, the most difficult to achieve as it appeared (to me) the
information was a closely guarded secret meant only for a select few. With
tenacity and perseverance I was finally able to crack the barrier and
obtain my goal after a rather lengthy battle. WfWg machine is only on the
network when I need to copy the entire DOS/Win system to one of the other
Win systems so I may back it up on CD-RW.

As some of you are aware, the W98SE system was replaced by Windows 2000
Pro, again plugged into the router with the WinXPP DHCP Server providing
the IP address for this machine. Workgroup name being "Workgroup".

I think I did all my network setups contrary to the information that I have
been seeing here -- "Network Windows XP Pro last". Did I 'screw up' in
this respect?

The reason that I asked that question is because I have been noticing some
peculiarities of late:

I've not been able to assign my network printer (working on the XPP
machine) to Win2K, whereas it would be recognized (and work) on the W98SE
system. This is not high on my list of priorities (yet), but I thought I
would throw it into the mix in the event that someone has a solution.

Also, I am getting a 'sporadic' network connection error when I attempt to
connect to XPP from W2K and vice versa. There are times when I can connect
to a drive/directory on the other machine, do my processing, disconnect the
networked machine and half an hour later, attempt the same connection only
to get an error message (I can't remember the exact wording of the
message).

My specific questions revolve around Workgroup and the network connection
error. Do all the computers have to be assigned to the same Workgroup?
That is, should I reassign the WinXPP Workgroup from (current) "MSHOME" to
"Workgroup"? Or do my problems lie elsewhere?

Also, WinXPP and Win2K are NT based systems, are they not? Is anyone aware
of compatibility issues between these two systems? (I suspect that they
would be more harmonious than most other systems, but I'm seeking answers)

TIA.

           Cheers ... Gerald
