Fedora is another full-fledged Linux distribution, from Red Hat-- Red Hat was,
for a long time, considered by many the #1 all-round Linux distribution; they
decided to concentrate on their more profitable server and other enterprise
products, with Fedora being an off-shoot aimed at desktop users.

While Ubuntu has become more popular as a Linux for the desktop in the last
couple of years, many users who started using Linux before that continue to
prefer Fedora.

The large number and range of Linux distributions is both a strength and a
weakness of the platform(s)- a strength because there are varieties of Linux
available for a wide range of uses and personal tastes-- some that will run
just fine on much older PCs, for instance, others that encourage lots of
fiddling, etc- and a weakness because it makes it harder for software and
hardware developers to create solutions that work for all Linux varients... and
as a result, some don't bother developing for Linux at all (see Lexmark, for
instance).
