I'm going through a similar dilemma... as I've mentioned before, I manage a
computer lab (32 student workstations running Windows XP) in an elementary
school having a total of about 70 computers. For the past 2 weeks, our school
system has been trying to cope with W32.Downadup infections on network servers
and some workstations-- while waiting for IT staff to come and check out each
of the school district's 10,000 computers, the school district management is
telling schools to leave computers powered off- which makes it difficult for me
to do my job.

I'm keeping a number of computers on and online, booted to Ubuntu CDs-- the
fine print in their directive notes that Macs and Linux systems are not
affected by the worm.

I'm considering setting up a test system running only Ubuntu-- the issue isn't
web browsing and Open Office-- at least 50% of the time, students are using one
of a large number of Windows-only educational software that I've collected over
the years. Despite this, I'm toying with the idea of moving all my workstations
to Ubuntu, to have them be safe and usable during the NEXT security 'crisis'.

However, I'm going to be retiring- either this year or next... the person who
replaces me will almost certainly be familiar with Windows, and almost
certainly lack familiarity with Linux.
