A friend of mine was a new Mac user (switcher from Windows), but after working
with her new 24" iMac for a while, she told me she had two complaints:

1) She missed the use of the right-mouse button-- I quickly showed her how to
enable 'secondary button support' on her Apple mouse (not an option on your
wife's Powerbook, however- though Ctrl+Click works for right-clicks on her
single-button trackpad)

2) She had Apple's iWork installed as word processor/spreadsheet/presentation
software, and found its Pages word processor very different from the MS Word
2003 she was used to... I walked her through downloading, installing, and
configuring OpenOffice.org- and now she's a happy camper... ironically,
OpenOffice is more like MS Office 2003 than either Windows MS Office 2007 or
Mac Office 2008 is.

By the way, speaking of OpenOffice vs MS Office-- I found yet another thing
that OO.org does better. I have students creating presentations that they then
use to accompany an oral report to their class & teacher. I want them to print
out handouts- 6 slides to a page, keeping a copy as their notes and giving a
copy to their teacher, so the teacher has a record of the content of their
presentation.

OpenOffice makes it easy to set 'handouts' as the printer default for
presentations; MS Office forces users to select this for each Powerpoint file
(though it does remember the last print setting chosen for that file). The
result- students using OpenOffice always print handouts... students using
Powerpoint often forget- the not-easily-changeable default is to print each
slide as a whole page (in colour)... so printing two copies of a 12 slide
presentation wastes paper, a HUGE amount of colour toner, and ties up the
printer for quite a while, making other users wait.

Googling how to change the Powerpoint default got me a Microsoft developer page
with a bunch of Visual Basic for Applications code, or a suggestion that a
downloadable Microsoft Office Resource Kit has an Office Policy Manager that
makes it possible to control the default... either way seems MUCH more
cumbersome than simply setting a preference- as can be done in OO.org.
