Ärende: I've had it!
====================
Hello CHARLES,

Responding to a post in the WIN95 area:
    On Wednesday March 16 2005 at 19:43,
CHARLES ANGELICH [1:123/140] wrote to GERALD MILLER,
    about: I've had it!

GM>>>> Too bad about the journalist. Would you create something on your

CA> Symantec, and others, are getting trickier. They offer mail-in rebates
CA> then you find out later it is only for 'upgrades' from an earlier

I think that is unethical (if it's not clearly stated on the outside of the
package, _before_ you purchase it), but it must be legal, otherwise they
would be in courts defending themselves against fraud and lawsuits...

[snip]

GM>>>> Okay, I was at the Terrabyte site. BootIt Next Generation when

CA> Understandable. I am not Terrabyte and can only hope that they are not
 CA> that way.

It is a "favorite" trick of (at least two, that I'm aware of) on-line
purchasing companies when dealing with 'out of country' customers.

GM>>>> Also, which program creates the Windows ISO image files? BING?
 GM>>>> Image for Windows? Both?

CA>>> The website is a bit confusing isn't it? The docs for BootitNG are
CA>>> confusing in much the same ways. :-)

GM>> Aren't you just the bearer of such good news? <g> Not much of an

CA> Well the upside is that I muddled through the user interface and

CA> can do it I guess most people can do it?

Then there is hope for me... <grin>

GM>> Have they given any indication that they intend to put their
GM>> documentation into "layman" terms and clarify any confusion?

CA> I heard a rumor about that but from a third party not directly
CA> connected with Terrabyte. Possibly from Langa?

I just checked the Langa site and found no mention of Terrabyte or BootitNG
(unless it was hidden in some article) in the Headlines...

[snip]

CA>>> Image for Windows uses a windows GUI interface to create the same
CA>>> image files BootitNG creates but also requires the 'lock' (free)
CA>>> software Terrabyte offers to lock Windows while the image is being
CA>>> written. IFW is a bit less expensive but won't do the multiboot,
CA>>> partitioning, etc. that BootitNG can do. I see no reason to not get
CA>>> the full magilla myself and have no use for IFW here now that I have
 CA>>> BootitNG installed. :-)

 GM>> I'm intrigued.

CA> Yes, it sounds interesting to me too but I'm not real happy about
CA> having to lock files during the image creation process. Either way,
CA> using IFW or BootitNG, the machine is tied up and cannot be used for
CA> anything else during the image creation.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to have locked files during the image
creation process. I know that I wouldn't want to chance a possibility of
file corruption with a file being written to / changed while I was creating
a backup. What would be the purpose of creating a backup if you wanted to
modify the file while it was being backed up?

If the machine is "tied up" during the image creation process, go outside
and play with the dog / kids, take a walk, or, in your case, use one of the
other machines (you're not tying up _ALL_ the machines when you're creating
the images, are you?). ;-))

GM>> I'll have to go back to their site and investigate the upgrade policy

CA> I don't recall what their update policy is. I've never updated mine
CA> since what works I don't mess with (usually). :-)

I can see that I have much to learn from you. <g>

           Cheers ... Gerald

... I'm sorry, Canadians have NO accent!
