Here's one Linux user which is not laughing at you. If ever you run 
into a problem like you had with firefox again run "updatedb" then
"slocate firefox |more". This will give you a good idea of where the
application is installed. Linux is still young as far as userbility
is concerned. It takes a great deal of learning to become comfortable
with it. RPM installs are a problem because libraries may need updating
but some times insist on removing the older ones. Big problem because
other applications may be using the older libs. Often this is not
a problem because they are usually upwardly compatible but not always.

Some times a distribution may not install an old app you like and if
you have the RPM for it from a previous install and try to install
that, the sparks can really fly. Either it won't install or will insist
on removing the new libraries and trashing the system. That is why
some Linux users will prefer to build from the source and this 
overcomes the problem as the libraries can be installed side by side.

Of course just because you have the xxx.tar.gz it doesn't mean you have
the support libraries and searching for them can be a PITA. I have
been using Linux for some years and can mostly overcome these
problems but for new users it can be a very steep learning curve
indeed.

As you say Linux has made great strides forward and for most users
distributions such as Red Hat and Mandrake will work as is. It's
only when you wish to expand your horizons that compiling or working
around the original RPM installation become necessary.

I only have dial up so i haven't looked at knoppix but it does appear
to be a useful introduction to a very powerful if not uncomplicated 
O/S. This is not an anti Windows rant but anyone who is getting
fed up with Microsoft's arrogance would do well to explore Linux
or any of the open source distributions.
