It'd just be easier to move the XP one to the top and change the default 
number.  Open a terminal window, become root (use the "su" command) and 
type in:

gedit /etc/grub.conf

Mine has this at the bottom:

title XP
         rootnoverify (hd0,0)
         chainloader +1

Move those 3 lines to just above the very first line that begins with 
"title" and change the line "default=" to 0, if needed.

You should also look in System, Administration for a utility that allows 
you to change the default boot OS - it would be very simple to use that 
so you can default to booting to XP rather than having to cursor down to XP.

Your initial question, however, was how to get rid of the extra Linux 
boot options.  Not being totally familiar with Ubunutu's way of doing 
things, you can use the add/remove software tool to get rid of old, 
unused kernels.  That would be the cleanest way of fixing things up. 
You could simply get rid of the recovery segments in grub.conf but the 
old kernels would still be installed.  The reason for multiple kernels 
is so that you can easily go back to an older one for testing or if a 
new one gives trouble.  Once you know you want to keep the latest 
version, you can uninstall the old versions as you wish.
