Paul,

Yes, I remember playing a little with COPY COM [filename] and pressing
the F6 key when I was finished with the file.

PQ> EV> I thought it was horrible, only showing one line of text to work on at
PQ> EV> a time.

PQ>:) Icky, isn't it. That reminds me of the first dedicated wordprocessing
PQ>-typewriter- I ever saw. It had something like a 5-line LCD display.

The first WP typewriter I remember seeing had a 1 line LCD display and
it didn't show the whole line, IIRC the text scrolled to the end of the
line.

PQ>Yep, I remember those days. I'd been using Win 3.xx for a couple of years b
PQ>then. But, I was a bit RTC (as Jean would say) and I used to use a little D
PQ>editor called EDWIN. The drawcard for me was that it was Wordstar compatibl
PQ>in file format and keystroke combinations, although I used to write files as
PQ>plain ASCII in any case. When the then new DOS Edit came out featuring
PQ>multiple open file editing mode, I was 'sold' and I ditched EDWIN.

I believe Jean wasn't the person who was first referred to as RTC,
I think it was me because I haven't allowed my XP SP2 box to accept
Windows Updates. ;-)

I remember when I first learned of the Improved EDIT that allowed
multiple opened files and also lot larger files.

IIRC the MS-DOS 5 EDIT wouldn't store over 150,000 characters (+ or -).

The newer EDIT solved that problem for me.

I just escaped to CMD (DOS) and opened a 24,677 lines
1,020,644 character file, the original MS-DOS EDIT would choak up really
bad on that one.

Well really, it would have just let me view the first so many lines of
the file.

I still will use EDIT to make text files, even on the XP and VISTA
boxes.

The Win 3.1 box doesn't get much use lately but it is still hooked up in
the computer shack as well as my (T)rusty old Commodore 64. ;-)

PQ>These days, for serious file editing (in Windows) I use a doover called PFE
PQ>(Programmers File Editor). It's public domain software, whose development I
PQ>followed for a number of years. Gosh, the version I'm using is 10 years old
PQ>this year! Yikes! Maybe I am RTC after all. ;-)

Follow the leader (ME)!

BTW, I have no idea what the tagline means.

I would guess it counts to 100 and stops. ???
