Hello, ED.

Saturday September 19 2009 at 22:21, you wrote to me:

Deleted files that were deleted using console mode programs don't go into the
Windows recycle bin as far as I know; since the program isn't using the GUI,
it's not part of the recycle bin.

EV> Also if I delete a file using LIST.COM it doesn't go into the Recycle
 EV> Bin either.

Again, same reason as above.

EV> I started with Commodore CBMBASIC, moved on to DOS, QBASIC and BATCH

I use Windows XP for my personal use and use OS/2 Warp 4.52 for my BBS. I
actually could use OS/2 for my own purposes and once I get off of my butt and
build a desktop machine (I use a laptop and have now eight computers sitting in
my office closet!), I might use eComStation for it.

 EV> for me.

I was just reiterating what MM's author has suggested due to different ways
that the 16-bit DOS and 32-bit Win32 versions work.

EV> I started out in the PC Compatible world using MS-DOS v.5.0.

I think I started at around DOS 2.1, but had really started using CP/M on a
Kaypro. I think. After my car accident last year and the resulting
concussion, my memory is like a faulty electrical outlet: sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. :)

EV> Earlier before I got a PC Compatible (and was using the Commodore 64)
EV> I visited at a friends home and he had IIRC a IBM PS-1 with IBM-DOS
 EV> v.4.

I have a complete working Commodore 64 setup in my closet behind me all in the
original boxes. I've got the beloved C64, 1541 disk drive, the Commodore
printer and a 12" monochrome Gorilla monitor. Just no room to get it set up
and running.

EV> I saw the convoluted effort he had to do to edit a file in EDLIN and
EV> was sure glad I waited for DOS 5 so I didn't have to fiddle with files
EV> the way he had to do.

Hmm, I know there were decent text editors around for DOS 5, so methinks your
pal might have not realized that EDLIN wasn't the way to go. According to what
I've read, EDLIN escaping Microsoft's R&D labs was a mistake and it was never
meant for general consumption.

EV> But I can read messages in either program without eyeglasses (for
EV> now). I use a desktop for most of my computing needs.

Ah, you're lucky. I'm only 37 and my eyesight is quickly deteriorating, but
it's more due to genetics than my other health problems (diabetes and
hypertension). I'm cross-eyed and now have farsightedness, so everything that
gets close to my eyes to read first gets blurry and then becomes completely
indistinguishable once it gets within arm's length!

I am using a 19" CRT monitor now, but it's going (hey, I only paid $10 for it,
so I got my money's worth). I have a 17" LCD monitor I'm not using so that
will be going on the BBS soon. My Windows machine has a 22" widescreen monitor
that, believe it or not, I can't see well unless I use my reading glasses.

Later,
Sean
