I have a wonderful HP DeskJet 500 printer that uses font cartridges.  I
recently bought three rather rare font carts for it on eBay for under $10.  The
printer is very reliable and works with pretty much anything I can throw at it.

The /real/ reason I keep it around is that I can fill the ink cartridge myself
for pennies.  Working for an inkjet/laser toner cartridge recycler has its
benefits. :)  I bought my own ink through an industry source and fill it at
home for about $1.20 or so per fill.  It's a little tricky to do with this old
cartridge (HP 20) since it uses an air bladder and tends to bleed unless you
quickly seal up the hole you make to fill it.

I'd share the knowledge, but I can't: non-disclosure agreement, dontchaknow. :P

This DJ500 is darn near bulletproof.  It was build when HP didn't make
"disposable" printers.  However, I am looking for an HP LaserJet 6L for my
office when I want to print "nice" things, such as important letters or such. I
can get the 6L toner cartridge pretty cheap (this is with no discount either,
but I buy it from one of our retail stores).

I have a beautiful Epson Artisan 800.  It's a very nice all-in-one: printer,
scanner, fax machine, memory card/USB stick reader/writer - even makes its own
graph paper and coloring books out of pictures!  But what isn't beautiful is
that the cartridges the Artisan uses are not rebuildable-they have "kill chips"
on them, rendering the internal electronics in the cartridge useless once the
electronics registers the cartridge as empty.

It's around $80 a pop for all seven cartridges.  With Epsons, you have to print
something every day or else you run the (expensive) risk of having a cartridge
dry out.

Don't toss your old HP printer!  Just donate it to a thrift store.  It's where
people like me get all the good electronics. :)
