when one looks a bit further ahead, after a bit of learning of course, one
would go out and buy one normal cable of whatever length, one crossover cable
of the shortest length available and a RJ45 coupler to connect them together
and then use those two cables with coupler to connect the two machine directly
together... that way, when one does move up to getting a hub, one only needs to
get one more normal cat5 cable and simple remove the coupler and short
crossover from the existing...

hey... you're not the only one who has done this... i once spent a few days
trying to get a client's network operating... nothing was working at all...
toward the end of the battle, i notice that the packages that the cables were
in had two sticker labels on them... like someone had put proper labels over
erroneous ones... turns out that that was backwards! none of the cables shipped
were standard cables... every one of them was crossover! being as they were
purchased cables from a well known supplier, i and my coworkers never thought
to put a cable tester on them to check that they were ok... once i discovered
this, during a cigarette break no less, i went out and grabbed my roll of cat5
cable, RJ45 ends, and crimper... in a few "short" hours, i had replaced all the
cables with "new" ones made right there on site and everything was all up and
running very quickly soon after...

question: what do you get when you connect two crossover cables via a RJ45
coupler?? ;)
