Ärende: message seed
====================
On or about 01-04-10 07:06, TOM WALKER allegedly uttered "message seed" to ALAN
ZISMAN:

AZ> TW> And those Old AT machines do not use IDE drives do they??

AZ>Systems from the mid-to-late 1980s, like IBM ATs and
 AZ>clones generally didn't
AZ>have hardware-support for IDE drives built in, since
 AZ>that standard only star
AZ>to become popular in the early 1990s... but add-on ISA-
 AZ>bus IDE adapters were
AZ>common add-ons for them... for a while, some sound cards
 AZ>included IDE adapte
AZ>so that IDE CD-ROM drives could be easily added to the systems.

TW> ypou just triggered soem Brain Cells. Those onf Drives wree ISA but the
TW> connectors were different instead of the one ribbon cable with todays
TW> connector o nit they used Two Ribbon cables. One wider then the other
TW> and Edge Connectors like the Floppy drives do.

RLL/MFM: Run Length Limited/Much Further (away than my) Memory. <G> IDE stands
for Intelligent Drive Electronics, and AFAIK only came on HDs. Industry
Standard Architecture (ISA) is the now defunct expansion bus on MBs. Todays
floppies still use RLL or MFM, but the edge connectors went out of favor a long
time ago. Separate data and control <?> cables is one for the museum!

Shoot... Now that I understand better - sorry I missed the "AT" part on my
first read - why not use a newer machine with a multi-pin (There's a name for
it, that is not coming to mind.) floppy cable and BIOS support for both sizes,
and use that to read the 5.25" disks? 5.25" drives used to come with that pin
format, plus a single edge connector. They might be a little rare, but
attainable. The trick might be to find one without cooked head gaps. From
there, USB stowage becomes more feasible.

I think DOS 4 came with SLIP/PLIP tools; is the only other way than NICn' two
machines that I can think of right now.

TW> I do stil have an Old Adapted Full Length Card HD controller. But I
TW> like the suggestion to just plug in a 3 1/2 floppy on the AT floppy
 TW> cable better.

There are (14-pin?) adapters for edge connectors to that modular format, but I
do think the BIOS needs to support 3.5" floppies for that to be workable.

TW> Looks like I am going to have to go up and get the computer and broinhg
TW> it home and see what I can do.
TW> Her son has been trying to talk her into getting a laptop so I wil
TW> lwant and see how that comes down and then get th old machien and see
TW> what I can save off of it.

Any way you slice that tomato, you'll be in for a long day. Good luck with it!

... James
