Originally, the real difference between a table in a spreadsheet and in a
database was that the entire spreadsheet was loaded into RAM while the database
was read off the hard disk (or network drive) as needed... so spreadsheets
worked faster but were limited in the amount of data that could be included.

Classic personal-use databases often allowed users to work without being aware
of any 'development tools' - whether 'flat file' databases like the one still
included with Microsoft Works or richer programs like FileMaker Pro or the very
good (but generally ignored) Lotus Access.

Certainly thinks like ODBC can be used at a range of levels, as you suggest,
but are not generally tackled by 'ordinary' users.
