It's strange that the unit is "stuck" on VR mode for the initial REC process.  
I've just started reading the manual and find that the description/use of VR
mode vs Video mode lacking.

Apparently VR mode is only supported on specific players.  The most practical
choice would be Video mode.  It seems silly to not make Video mode the default.


But I note that your unit CAN burn a programme (an output source) to disc
directly.  Mine does too.  But as I mentioned in a previous message, it makes
more sense to copy to the hdd.  Then one has the advantage of basic editing and
file-combining features.

No..  We have the same size hdd, 160GB.  On SP mode, we both get approx the
same number of hours: 68.

Another interesting feature of your recorder is the ability to dub a DVD disc
(backup copy).   That's very handy when needing to hand out multiple copies of
DVDs.

Direct to DVD is fine if you don't plan to re-organize the taped recordings in
any further, and just have one per disc.  I have an old VHS that contains the
recordings from old 8mm film (that's actual FILM, not the digital video).  Each
8mm roll held about 10 to 15 minutes of recording.  Some of the rolls have
ended up out of sequence.  So, it's nice to have it all copied onto the hdd
first, then I can separate each roll and reorganize the collection as required,
even by subject later.

You're lucky.  Your 8mm is the video type.   Mine is the film type!  I'd love
to redo the film transfers.  The fellow who did the 1st transfers from 8mm
film-to-VHS simply projected to a screen and just re-filmed that.  The colours
on the VHS are not as brilliant and wonderful as I remember on the original
film.

Today..  film transfers are not cheap.  :(
