You'll need help I promise you.

It CAN be configured to look like a Windows desktop however
there's a bit more to it than Ubuntu I expect.

For instance Jean Parrot mentioned his Ubuntu firewall passed the "Shields Up,
test
at www.grc.com

When I installed Slack 13.0 there was no firewall however I knew
to download rc.firewall version 2.0 final
chown -c root rc.firewall
as root
chmod +x rc.firewall
as root
mv rc.firewall /etc/rc.d/
cd /etc/rc.d
and execute
./rc.firewall
to install it.

From there on it activates automatically upon booting
and steaths the first 1056 ports and denys attempts from individuals
to ping your system thus denys identifying it as a target.

That said it IS becoming easier to deal with for the newcomer
but unless you've limited computer power or minimal memory
I don't believe I'd recommend it as easy.

Dialup ppp is rather easy to setup but a cable modem or DSL
takes
dhcpcd -d -t 30 eth0 &
to setup - activate your ethernet card to interface with the cable or
DSL modem.
Or sub 1 - 3 for any of the other preconfigured ports your
network card might be on for eth0
provided it isn't on the first port 0

Personally I keep at least one user account and usually two open as user
at the command line, one lite GUI desktop for surfing with the latest
Firefox release in the current Slackware Firefox release with
pkgtool
and turn on my network card with
sleep 12 && dhcpcd -d -t 12 eth0 &
exiting from root before 12 seconds elapses and I'm online.

If you want to give it a go I'll be happy to assist you and pass along my
contact email address providing you my more secure one from there but as I
say unless you've limited CPU power or limited memory Ubuntu
is obviously from posts I've seen easier to employ.

Even installing the better command line mulitmedia movie player Mplayer
is rather more a chore than anything above.
You have to download the codecs, decompress them, untar them
to the correct directory and as root in the mplayer directory
./configure
make
make install
make clean

Above is a fair hint at what you'll be looking at after the relatively
easy installation from CD or DVD.

Then too to convert CD's and wav files to copywrited .mp3 or open free license
.ogg
format you need to install LAME much the same as Mplayer.

Let me know if you want to take the plunge.

Maurice in the Linux echo, my mentor in getting to where I am at,
has been very kind and patient with me in getting me to where I'm comfortable.

I've saved ALL his posts to me and some to others and have them backed up
in several places including off site so as to retrieve for the 10 - 12 percent
of
the instruction he's passed along to me that I tend to forget while retaining
the rest.

Oh and setting up MY limited ATI AGP video a ATI Rage Pro Mach 64 for
prefetchable
memory buffer goes like this on my machine with my video

echo base=0x91000000 size=0x1000000 type=write-combining > /proc/mtrr

lspci -vv | less will get you your prefetchable base but your size will be
determined by the
amount of video memory will be defined by 0x1000000 - 0x4000000 or 0x8000000
respectively meaning size in hexidecimal of 16 meg - 64 meg and 128 Meg of
video memory
respectively in hexadecimal.

So are you game for this or is this a bit much?

BTW Slackware 13.0 comes with Mplayer preconfigured as well
as the graphical desktop gxine however due to questionable legality
surrounding the playing of DVD's you really have to use Mplayer retrieved
from the Mplayer web site in the Netherlands or SVN referenced on their
download page.

Closed captioning requires yet a bit more in the installation of fonts.

This would be your beginners primer ;-)

Not meaning to discourage you but rather to present some actual examples
of what's needed.

BTW, the above is I'd say half or better of what you'd actually need as
regards to getting pretty well configured.

I've got a pretty good tutorial I could file attach to you
on command line *nix commands as well.
