Just to be sure i wasn't leading you astray i decided to have a look
at some documentation i have. I couldn't find anything that contradicts
my methodology as far as Linux is concerned. However Win NT is a different
beast altogether.

I think you have summed it up here. With Windows root directories i 
think you are wise to keep them on lowest partition as is reasonably 
possible.

Again i can only proffer a personal opinion. It is not the size of the 
disk so much as where the root partition (system files) are situated.

Some time ago i was having this discussion with someone in this echo 
and they kindly pointed me to an area on the Microsoft web site where further 
information could be had. I haven't got the addy but i do have the
documents. I have taken some information from them in the hope
that you can do a search and find them at Microsoft.
