agreed... however, what was the first windows OS that came with a firewall
built into it? ;)

how about the holes that could still be gotten thru in the above OS' default
setup? ones where LSASS and such could be attacked? (maybe i'm thinking of
another way to get to them?)... i have seen newly installed machines running
maked on the 'net in the hopes that they can get all their updates downloaded
form m$' site and installed before some infestation finds them and gets in...
i've seen numerous of those machines fail in that attempt, too... especially
the older stuff...

like you and holger, i still run OS/2 over here and while there are no
infestations targetted at it, i moved it behind a dedicated firewall machine as
soon as i could and not loose any of my existing capabilities... since that
machine used to be the connection and router machine with its other duties,
this also took a load off of it and i didn't have to wonder if something was
possibly able to get thru or onto it without my knowing...

so now SmoothWall Express 3 protects my network and provides me even more
options then what i had before... and my Guardian Active Response mod that
reacts to snort alerts and terminates unwanted attacking connections at the
perimeter works a treat and stops all detected unwanted traffic and attacks in
their tracks ;) ;) ;)

i've done very much the same... ya gotta drop to the basics and give good
analogies that they can relate to :P

i use the "sailor in bangkok with the hooker and no condoms" story which is
very similar to the above ;) :)
