That's the thing-it's NOT happening like that anymore.  It's more
social engineering than outright attacks.  Thanks to Microsoft, it
used to be smart people running dumb computers and now it's dumb
people running smart computers.  These days, there's no "hacking",
it's just script kiddies running scripts they find on the Web.
They're too stupid to go after ports directly.  God forbid that
someone actually try to forge their own UDP packet or something or
know the difference between "stateful" and "stateless"...

First of all, what in the hell were you doing running the machine that
wasn't firewalled in the first place?  Maybe that's why I've never had
any problems...I've always installed an OS off the network or if I do,
I make damn sure it's got a hardware firewall plugged into it.  Then
again, I also have the latest fixpacks on some other media so I can
set up the machine without having to go online to get fixes
first...but always behind a hardware firewall if I do.

I wasn't talking about you, Mark, I was talking about the AV/AM
people.  They've been caught in either padding the truth or outright
lies before to scare people into buying their software.

I'm also pretty jaded because after twenty years of doing everything
known to man and God with computers, I've yet to experience a single
scenario you've exampled so far.  I'm not calling you a liar, but it's
just hard for me to believe.
