Kommentar till en text av AUGUST ABOLINS
Ärende: QWK REP blues..
=======================
AA>ED VANCE -> AUGUST ABOLINS said..

AA> EV> Your comment above about You "stored all the messages in a
AA> EV> database" had my mind thinking of "how large of a hard drive
AA> EV> did You have" back when You used SEMPOINT to hold Many Many
AA> EV> .QWK packets?

AA>I had at least 250mb on one winme pc as my second installation of Sempoint.
AA>had about 80mb on an OS/2 pc that was home to my first installation of
AA>Sempoint prior to that.

AA>Text files really don't take up much storage space. I may have kept a few
AA>hundred messages across several packets/sessions at any one time, and I
AA>maintained a few hundred on a permanent basis.

August,

Hard Drive space was one of the things I knew I needed a Gob of, when I
got my 486DX33 PC Compatiable in Feb. 1994, the box had 16MB RAM
(OUCH!).

My calculations for just the cost of the RAM back then was US$560.00,
a lot of computers that are currently sold now can be bought for that
much money, with 1 to 2GBs of RAM. ;-) AH, the good old days! <GRIN>

AA> EV> I just Save the Messages I "Think"TM I would want to refer
AA> EV> back to at a later time in Text Files so that I can use LIST
AA> EV> or EDIT to read it again or to Copy and Paste from the older
AA> EV> message.

AA>Sempoint allows saving any message as a separate text file (via Export). Or,
AA>you can just let Sempoint manage it internally. I preferred the latter beca
AA>Sempoint has pretty good search function.

Just playing with Sempoint, I learned I could Delete messages from the
Database that I didn't care to keep forever.

AA> EV> The PC's advertised in Late 1993 were being sold with 200 MB
AA> EV> or 250(225?) MB Hard Drives in them, so I wanted a Bit More
AA> EV> Space that I thought I could afford to pay for.

AA>Your 300mb drive should be ample space for basic Sempoint usage/storage.

Back in 1994 I wouldn't had purchased Sempoint, although the message
database it uses probably would had been more efficient than my storing
(then) 200KB Text Files so I could use EDIT to (re)read them.

At a later date someone on the GT POWER BBS System BBS I was using sent
me an updated EDIT that could easily handle 500KB Text Files,
That really 'Made My Day!' when I could look at a text file that size.

AA> EV> How SEMPOINT handles Taglines is important to me, as I Love to
AA> EV> "Steal" GOOD Taglines from the messages I read for later
AA> EV> Reuse.

AA> EV> I will have to find out how SEMPOINT's Tagline line is
AA> EV> configured and get back with James for His comments to see if
AA> EV> He has any trouble "Swipeing" Taglines from SEMPOINT messages!

AA>I don't recall anything about tagline capture function in Sempoint. But I d
AA>remember that it could access a text file with a tagline per line, and it wo
AA>either append a line into your message at random from that source file or yo
AA>could configure a specific tagline per echo.

I have Sempoint set to put Random Taglines in my messages, I still have
to learn how to get a .REP packet to put on a BBS.

I have added a Tagline to Sempoints DEFAULT.ORI file.

I still have a lot of .QWK packets to read and I'm sure by now someone
has told me what Sempoint expects me to do so it can make a .REP file.

I hope!

AA> EV> ---# -rw-rw-rw- : the file permission of the Beast.

AA>Cute.

From what little I know of UNIX the Tagline in my last message doesn't
have an Owner to it, just the permission to Read and Write to the
file(s).

I haven't gotten that far with UNIX/Ubuntu type things.
