ML>>>> yeah... but i can't even begin to count the times that my
ML>>>> screen looked nothing like the one in the tutorial or
ML>>>> even in some of the books ;)

CA>>> You think there are different menus when everyone is using
CA>>> XP or W2K or W9x?

ML>> yeah, i know so across those three... their layout and/or
ML>> wording is slightly different with each...

CA> I knew that they are different across platforms (and I hate
CA> them for it too) but I worded that question badly. What I
CA> meant to ask was do you expect two XP systems menus to vary
CA> or two W9x sytems menus to vary, etc?

oh! no, not really... maybe only in a themes way that might effect the font and
colors and such...

oh, and then there's something like what i found today... i was looking at a
list of easter eggs and their triggers... one was for IE6... one part of the
trigger is to click on the acknowledgements link in the about window... my
acknowledgements link is almost gone! its been scrolled down the fixed-size
window by all the patches applied and how they are listed at the top of the
window... another few and the close button will also be inacessible!

ML>> i won't even mention the fancy crap that XP has turned on
ML>> by default... one of the first things i do on XP boxes that
ML>> folk really love (no sarcasm) is reducing all the video
ML>> stuffs and dropping the theme settings back so that it
ML>> looks and acts like win98...

CA> I did make those changes to my brother's XP after explaining
CA> to him that others with XP trying to help him do ?whatever? will
CA> be directing him to what they see on their XP install which he
CA> may or may not see on _his_ after I make the changes. He likes
CA> W98SE and said to do it so I did. :-)

it does greatly speed up the hog, doesn't it ;)

ML>> for most of them, the speed and snappiness returns and they
ML>> are very happy... however, that doesn't help with the stuff
ML>> that they've moved around, wizardized, or otherwise
ML>> visually altered...

CA> Worst ever was my getting to my daughter 2 days too late after
CA> she had added animated cursors and other 'niceties' to her
CA> Windows machine. I couldn't get all of it out and she refused
CA> to allow me to turn off all the _pink_ on the desktop. UGH!!!

ROTFL!!!!!

 CA> --8<--cut

ML>>>> a netmask is, as it says, a mask...

CA>>> --8<--cut

CA>>> Saved to a text file. :-)

ML>> yeah, i think i'm going to have to go and grab some of my
ML>> postings and start putting them on content pages on my
ML>> website... that one took a little while to do (maybe 15 to
ML>> 20 minutes) and i also had the assistance of a "subnet
ML>> calculator" ;)

CA> I would definitely put that information into a webpage if I
 CA> were you.

i've been slowly going back and retrieving some of my better ones as i go...

CA>>> I guessed that the "mask" of "netmask" referred to masking
CA>>> bits but so many standard terms have been co-opted to
CA>>> other purposes I wasn't sure. Now I know, thanks. :-)

ML>> i know what you mean about the co-opted words and
ML>> phrases... i detest it with a high passion...

CA> Getting worse it seems - no imagination to create new
CA> terminology for new technology I guess?

yeah, sumptin' like dat!

 CA> --8<--cut

ML>>>>>> i know that last part sounds confusing and that's where
ML>>>>>> the use of a hub or switch comes in to play verses
ML>>>>>> using a router... in most cases...

CA>>> I understand somewhat - well enough for a guy who won't
CA>>> use the information any time soon. :-)

ML>> i hear ya! i've actually so far as to create different
ML>> networks here

 CA> --8<--cut

CA> I had plans to develop a network at home just to experiment
CA> with but other priorities (life) came along and interfered.

know that feeling... my systems are like my cars, though... once i get them,
they are mine and likely aren't going anywhere... expecially after i network
them and put them to work ;)

 CA> --8<--cut

ML>>>> i wonder what'll happen to m$ when billyboy passes on...

CA>>> Being somewhat autonomous he has a focus no normal person
CA>>> could match. I guess it would depend on whether his
CA>>> replacement(s) were autonomous as well. :-)

ML>> <<shudder>> i don't thing i want to even comtemplate it...
ML>> <<shudder>> things

ML>> could get a whole lot worse if certain paths thru time are
ML>> followed :(

CA> Personally I always wanted WOZ to be the 'bill gates' of our
CA> generation. I would rather WOZ had never met Jobs then _maybe_
CA> things would've been different at Apple. :-(

true... then again, it may be possible that things might get turned way way
around and really come out ahead for the little people ;)
