With all this latest chatter about AP's and wifi, I just thought I'd let you
know that a few days ago I put one of the D-Link 713P's that you sent me
several years ago into service as my main router.  You sent me two units.  One
worked fine except the wifi subsystem was dead.  The other worked fine as a
wifi unit, but all the wired ports were dead.  I didn't feel compelled to throw
them out because something was nudging me to hang on to them despite their
partial non-functionality. I am currently using the former one with the dead
wifi subsystem.  My own 713P (a second model from ebay) suddenly developed
problems in the wired subsystem so I could no longer use it to feed my LAN. 
But one of your's, even though the wifi part is dead, works fine as a main
router.  Infact, this forced me to find a new AP solution so that I could
connect my wifi laptops to the LAN.

First a little background info for those of you who may not understand the
significance of my needing the old D-Link 713P's in the first place.  This
particular model was among the few at the time that was a wifi-router with a
serial (DB9) connector to connect a modem.  Yes.. I am probably still among the
few people in this echo that still relies on dialup for most of my internet
acccess.

Back to the AP solution.. I just a happened to have another spare (discarded)
D-Link WBR-2310 from about a year ago that a friend was pleased to get rid of
since he claimed it was totally unreliable. Well.. after a hard reset I found
that it cooperated quite well, but I never really had a use for it, until now.

I simply disabled the WBR-2310's DHCP, set its own IP address to match my
network, plugged it into one of the working ports of the  old 713P, and I then
had wifi access back for my network.

A couple of bonuses to this new arrangement:  [1] the WBR-2310 supports the
faster g protocol (great for pushing files over the network and for supporting
my other two laptops that are g-capable), and [2] I now have the better WPA2
for the wifi part; the old 713P only had WEP.

One of the wired ports on the 713P doesn't work, but all I need are two: one
goes to a wired switch, and the other goes to the WBR-2310 configured as an AP.

I'll probably be dropping dialup in a year or so, but for now, a 10+ year old
713P comes to the rescue.
