Stupid of me.
Too used to the Linux command line console.

Stupid part is the run command sits in the same place 
in the Linux GUI desktop.

Yeah, that's it.
I'd been trying to recall the dir/s/a: syntax as well to locate all
system files.

I need to defrag the hard drive to compact down Windows
and its files.
simply defrag isn't it?

I tried it from the DOS prompt but it said it needed to be run from
Windows.

These Itronix laptops were sold in large numbers to the government
so their security is fairly decently locked down and meddling with 
the software discouraged in how it's configured.

Oops, just found how to defrag.
Been a while.
Go into Windows and then defrag from the DOS prompt, not via F8 boot into DOS.

Not on this machine however it jarred my memory so it runs from the dos 
prompt under Windows.

Hey thanks muchly, this is cool.

On this one occassion I intend to keep Windows on both machines
electing to dual boot Linux - Windows 95.

GNU/Linux for speed on these old laptops but keeping the legacy software out
of nostalga as a pretty neat keep sake.

ISTR dir/s a: or similar syntax?

I'm not certain but ISTR I may have to remove hidden system file attributes
before running defrag in order to put the system files at the end of 
the files on drive C before reset the attributes hidden system and
split the partiton for Linux.

Funny after having been around Linux for a time I find Windows 
counterintuitive. 

I've since looked on the internet and there are quite a few of these available
used however I got mine at the bargain basement price of $20 each with 200 MHz
Pentium processor.

I just can't bear to remove Windows on this occassion as
the laptops are just too unique in original condition. 

Now to get about the task of figuring out how to split open
the battery packs without destroying the proprietary
connectors so I can snag some NiMHd cells to rebuild them.

By the time I get through they'll have a 4 Gig compact flash memory 
each as well and the software is already apparently configured for
a D and E drive on the PCMCI slot interface.
