I am overly cautious and paranoid too.

When I download a file, before I will open it I will Scan it with
McAfee, SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes to see if it passes all three
tests. It doesn't take me very long to use those three programs to check
out my downloaded files.

I do this regularly even to files recommended by the folks here, Kim
Komando, Ask Leo, ... anybody. It's On My Machine and so I scan it.

I re-scanned with all three scanners, all the programs on my computer
that MSERT.EXE found as Potentially unwanted software.

There was only one file that didn't pass the three re-tests,
that was the NIRSOFT_PACKAGE_BETA_100.ZIP program,
McAfee detected Artemis and Passview in it.

I clicked the Trust button to allow that program to remain on my
computer in case I did want to install it at some later time.

Nirsoft passed the SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes tests.

MSERT only reported the Passview as suspect, it didn't mention Artemis.

One thing about MSERT that got my dander up was the program took the
Liberty to Partially Remove something from two of the files that it
didn't report in the Potentially unwanted software listing it showed me
before I continued on with the program.

I am glad Microsoft did put a View option that I could use to look at
what it thought was bad stuff on my computer.
If they had only had the option to Continue On to Clean the files it
found I probably would have went to Task Manager and Closed out
MSERT.EXE.

I didn't make the 5% grade, but thought I'd try out the download from MS
to see what their scanner program said about my XP box.

As I said above, I'm not a Fan of MSERT.EXE so I won't take the time to
Update it after the 10 days runs out.

At least I tried it.
