JP> EV> I was doing a backup using TI.
JP> EV> You ought to have known that is what I do, as often as we have discusse
JP> EV> it here. ;-)

JP>.I assumed that you were not THAT set in your ways and maybe tried a clone.

Jean,

RTC.......RTC.......RTC.

JP> EV> I believe TI allows files to be extracted from the backup it makes too.
JP> EV> Although it is probably not as simple to do as it is to retrieve a file
JP> EV> from a TI clone.I've never tried extracting/retrieving a file from one
JP>the backup
JP> EV> that I have made, but I'm pretty sure it would work.

JP>.It does as per their docs but why complicate life for yourself ? You need a
JP>extra step if not two, to gain access to a particular file in a backup. In a
JP>clone, it is only a matter of moving that file across the screen fro the USB
JP>to your C:\.

I may have 3 external hard drives that I store my TI backups on (amoung
other things) but I don't want to dedicate any of them to doing service
as a clone as you enjoy doing.

I prefer using them to store TI backups for my equipment.

Also I do not use eBay to get used hardware to hold the clone data.

My external drives were bought new at retail price.

I am glad for you that you have had good results purchaseing things from
eBay.

JP> EV> Although I have kept my older TI backups on the external drives, I know
JP> EV> that the last one is the only one that I would use if ever I needed to.
JP> EV> Those backups that I made earlier could be erased if I wanted to free
JP> EV> the disk space.

JP>.I just can not see the reasoning behind this. Granted, the many BUs are may
JP>nice to have as opposed to a single clone but in my mind, a clone of yesterd
JP>is all that I need, a clone from the day before yesterday is of no use to me
JP>the latter one has all that I might need.

There is one advantage of storeing multiple backups on a hard drive
instead of using it for only a TI clone.

If I were to use the latest TI backup and it failed, I still have the
previous backup before it to try to use to restore my data.

You would have to have two or three hard drives per computer dedicated
to TI clone to have a 'backup' in case the last clone that you made
failed.

What I am referring to is the old backup scheme of having Child, Parent,
GrandParent copies of the backed up data so you would have something to
restore your data from in case the Child copy of the data failed.

I hope when you ever need to use a TI clone that you made that it works.

JP> EV> I just haven't taken the time to erase any of them yet.

JP> I think that it is called procrastination ! Hooots.

Right You Are!

If I ever need the room on any of my three external drives I know that I
Can remove the earlier backups to give me the space I want.

JP> EV> I only posted the message about TI giving me an error message because
JP> EV> 'it' knew that I had a sick drive and the drive was needing some fixing
JP> EV> which I did by using CHKDSK to report on the drive and then CHKDSK /f t
JP> EV> fix the problem.

JP>.Things happen. I received a 500 G HD from eBay and the small SATA connector
JP>was damaged, I hollered lour enough that the seller sent me a new one. As I
JP>wrote . . things happen. I would use the Windows CHKDSK and not the DOS one,
JP>different folks. Maybe an elevated CMD ???

I wouldn't want to go through the aggrevation of getting something from
eBay and Not Getting What Was Advertised in useable shape.

You're satisfied with the eBay experience and I'm glad for you that you
make it work for yourself.

As far as using CHKDSK, I only (would) use the version of CHKDSK that is
offered on the machine I am using.

In my case, since I was using TI to make a backup From my XP box To the
Wallet drive, I used CHKDSK on the XP box, from a CMD prompt, to check
out and fix the problem on the Wallet drive.

I really wouldn't know how to run CHKDSK (or CHKDSK /f) from within the
XP Windows GUI (Graphical Users Interface).

But since I am familiar with using CHKDSK, since I started using MS-DOS
in 1994 with version 5.0, I had no trouble going to a CMD Prompt to use
it to help me out.

I lean toward learning 'some' of the more technical inter-workings of
using my computer than you do, and there is nothing wrong with what you
do, you enjoy using your computer(s), I enjoy using mine.

I'm sure there are many things that You have learned using the Windows
GUI, that I don't know, but if I asked a question here about something
that you know about, you would be very glad to share your knowledge with
me, as you do with the TI clone procedure verses TI backup procedure.
;-) ;-) ;-)
