If you're a tinkerer, it's possible to replace the screens yourself. 
I've rebuilt a couple of laptops, replaced motherboards, etc.; and am 
currently in the process of replacing a screen on a laptop I was gifted. 
  Granted, it's not for the faint of heart.  What makes it easier is 
when you can find the service manual for the laptop you're working on, 
online.

That helps give guidance on tear-down and build-up procedures, the steps 
to take, etc.

You can access most Dell systems' service manuals, as well as 
Acer/Gateway, and some others, online.  Toshiba doesn't make their 
service manuals available online, but there are a few places you can go 
on the web where someone else has taken Toshiba laptops apart and 
photographed the process, and provided step-by-step instructions.

You can buy replacement LCD screens on eBay, Amazon, and other sites, as 
well as replacement parts, including keyboards, cases, etc.

Of course there's the cost/benefit ratio you have to consider.  It was 
worth it for me, as it enabled me to get a laptop (in the case of my 
Acer) with a 15.4" screen, 64-bit AMD Turion CPU, 2GB of ram, and 
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, for about $150 - $175 in parts. 
It sold originally for $600 or so in 2006.

Working on a Dell Inspiron 1545 right now.  It appears I'll be able to 
get it up and running for less than $150 total.  The most expensive part 
will be the LCD panel, and I can get those for under $100 off eBay or 
Amazon.
