I admit attempting a v10.04 U'u 64-bit install but in the end it defaulted to
32-bit.  I don't feel short-changed at all.

Yes.  It's on the bottom (screen) line much like a 'status line', showing
things like currently running user programs, the available virtual screens
(usually four) and the trashcan.

The start bar/menu is at the top, which also has the quick-launch icons on the
left, and the right end has various status icons such as the LAN connection,
the volume slider, system time (with left-click calendar function), and, access
to various exit options.

I have both set to auto-hide so that I can access the full real estate of the
22" screen.  (I do however tend to avoid using the area used to display the
Conky stats & analogue clock, on the righthand edge.  Say about 2.5-to-3 inches
are unused.  That way I don't get tennis-eyeball on the large screen.  :)

Much like with Windows you can move them around to any screen edge, as desired.

[Edit: after reading Alan's reply I'm a bit confused... I did try a recent,
maybe v11.04 U'u install on my little Dell netbook.  It was a horrible
experience with the new 'Unity' interface.  I gave up on it & now have two
different boot options for either of two Puppy linux configs instead.  I figure
I came out ahead with the deal, since the original U'u factory install on the
netbook failed to upgrade through intervening versions of U'u.  The sequence
used was: upgrade through at least two U'u versions; nup, didn't work - fail;
then, tried U'u 11.04 (netbook); nup, ugly and counter-productive; installed
Puppy v5.20... very happy; installed Puppy v5.25 in different partition...
very, very happy.  All without burning or otherwise harming any CD-ROMs, BTW.
