Well, the 'standard' says "skin a cat" but there's 99 different ways of doing
it.  ;-)

Strictly speaking neither have I (seen any of those)...

There really was a program called 'Fido' back in the early days (middle-80s). 
At that time I was messing with CP/M on an Apple ][ at work and playing with
CP/M PCs either at technical college or other people's places and was unaware
of Fidonet directly.  Though I did have a vague impression of a Fido-like
fraternity through discussions with a couple of guys at work: a LTCOL dentist
(a total freak [but I liked him] who had a particular dislike for the mainframe
installation and its IT staff), and a signals Corporal who introduced me to the
non-Fido BBS world in a 10 minute stickybeak during an on-line session on his
CP/M machine at home once.

I only know a little of Synchronet as I have an installation archive of it and
have browsed the documentation.  I also browse its support echo occasionally (I
don't know why but I also browse support echoes for other BBS packages).  It's
incredibly complex but that is reflected in its durability & flexibility and
the capability for customisation.  IAC, I don't like it but am intrigued by it.

Can I paint a world-wide infra-red picture of Fidonet software development
sites for you?  There are some warm spots in North America but there are very
h-o-t places in Europe and former eastern-bloc countries (ex-Soviet), doing
some totally radical evolution (which represent about 85% of active systems in
Fidonet BTW).  On the downside, most of that evolution suits their particular
needs along with geograhical and financial restrictions.  What they're doing
may come too late for Fido's long-term survival anyway.  It's too late for me
to learn Russian, besides.  :)
