====================
Hi! Ed,

On Sun, 22 Apr 12, you wrote to me:

 EV> Thanks for Educating Ed.

That's my job. ;-)

EV> I thought that the Paging (Swap) File was just there for temporary
EV> use by Windows, sorta like a Scratch Pad that I keep my ROUNDTUIT
 EV> Notes on.

Yes, and it's a very complicated process for the OS to decide what goes or
stays during that time (of great need).

These days with most PCs having great gobs of RAM we don't need to have huge
swap files/space. I use a 50/50 option if I have a choice in the matter.
Ubuntu went overboard creating a 9.3GB swap partition on this PC (back in
October 2010). After nearly 12 days of uptime since the last U'u update
requiring a reboot it has used only 65megs. At the time of creation I don't
remember having much of a choice.

EV> I increased the size of the Paging File because I read in a book that
EV> doing that would help keep Windows from Pausing at times.

The pausing is most probably due to some other reason. I recall that Windows
3.xx used to do that for a local icon cache thing, and for a refresh of the
menus & desktop. Also, there used to be the occasional battle on the network
as to which PC was to be the next 'browse maaster'.

EV> Even after I increased the Paging File size, a few days later I was
EV> moving several files from one directory to another one and when I

Eeek!

EV> After about a minute of nothing happening I noticed the Desktop Icons
EV> disappeared and then next Windows Explorer shut down.

Oops...

EV> A moment later the Desktop Icons reappeared.

Neat. :)

EV> I just don't like it when the Windows (OS) does unusual things
EV> unexpectantly. You're going to say I should use "LINUX", right???

My lips are sealed.

EV> I've stopped using WallWatcher and Ethereal to monitor what the
 EV> router/DSL modem is doing.
EV> I had no idea of how much extra stuff was going on while a home
EV> computer is connected to the internet.

Oh. yeah. There is a lot. The big surprise is the warfare going on, on
several fronts. The daily forays by Arab & Israeli hackers (against each
others' sites), or Chinese and/or Korean hackers (against everyone else) make
for interesting reading whenever they make the news. After a while it all
becomes somewhat mundane, as you found out.

EV> I have a little knowledge about Packet transmission because several
EV> years ago (early 1990's) I used Packet on Ham Radio with a program
EV> called DIGICOM II for the Commodore 64.

Mmm... okay. For me, I can only just spell HAM. :)

 EV> Thanks for Your help.

Anytime. Like the saying goes, 'at my age, everyone is entitled to my
opinion'.  =:)

Not many people have ever seen COBOL at work, or play. Have you? Check this

It's from a tech college homework exercise that I did back in March 1992.
Quite readable, hey? Oh, and I failed the subject due to workload. With COBOL
there was always a lot of writing. A -lot- of writing.

Cheers,
Paul.
