FWIW: NNTP was created in 1984...

FWIW: QWK was created in 1987... Blue Wave was created in 1990...

QWK was not created for fidonet... it was created for PCBoard systems...
especially those in the RIME/PCRelay network... for a time, it was limited to
those BBS' because there were no doors available for any other BBS'... then the
doors started appearing and QWK usage grew pretty rapidly and was finally
introduced to fidonet later on...

i suppose that's one way to look at it... another is that it is only recently
that it is available for use with fidonet systems... the use of NNTP to access
them, that is... fidonet has, actually, had its messages available via usenet
news format and protocols for a long time but no one wanted to use it after the
live internet came along and the use of UUCP was diminished until it was no
longer used... one of my downlinks specifically wrote a program, called amanda
after his daughter, to toss fidonet mail to and from the usenet news format for
the waffle bbs ;)

for many, yes... however there are complaints and discussions, taking place
today, about QWK and other offline mail formats... one side is specifically
miffed that the QWK standard doesn't allow for fidonet's 72 character subject
lines and as such, when a message is placed into a QWK packet, the subject line
is truncated... this breaks threading in some software... QWK also does not
support any FTN capabilities like the hidden MSGID and REPLY control lines...
these are used for dupe detection but they are also used for threading in
recent years... this lack of MSGID and REPLY linking also breaks threading in
some software... i see no problem with QWK and other formats other than the
limitations that they have as compared to other fidonet software... however,
the tone of some of these folks makes it seem that their goal is to eliminate
QWK from the network... i don't see this happening but they also do not see all
the users in fidonet because they do not carry or participate in the general
areas where the users do hang out... to say these individuals have their
blinders on is quite the understatement...
